Karen Burns, BA, Executive Director
Karen Burns joined CASA as Executive Director in September 2002. She is responsible for the CASA program’s management—both as an organizational entity with staffing, fiscal control and revenue development needs–and as a volunteer-driven agency which executes its mission through recruiting, training and retaining 200+ Advocates. She is Responsible for CASA’s external relationships with the child protection system community, the Superior Court, and DYFS; she also serves as the liaison to the National CASA and New Jersey CASA organizations. Working through the CASA Board of Trustees and the “Friends of CASA” network, she is insistently seeking to expand CASA’s reach. Karen believes that “Childhood is very short, and it is our challenge and societal responsibility to provide more Child Advocates for traumatized foster children.” Karen’s prior experience included a career as a Managing Consultant for The Gallup Organization where she specialized in human talent application and workforce engagement improvement. She also served as a Vice President for the Direct Marketing Association. She received her B.A., English from Hunter College and has extensive graduate credits in organizational development and social welfare and policy. A social responsibilities activist for faith-based outreach programs to Newark and other municipalities, she serves on the Board of Wind of the Spirit, a Morris county-based Immigrant/Labor Rights group. She is married with two college-age children. Phyllis Simon, MSW, Associate Director: Operations
Phyllis received a B.A. in Psychology/Sociology from the University of Rochester in 1975 and an M.S.W. from the University of Maryland in Baltimore in 1980. Her entire professional life as a social worker has been in the child welfare system starting with her first position as a caseworker with the Prince George's County (MD) Department of Social Services. In this capacity, she investigated allegations of abuse and neglect and provided continuing services to families and children. When she started her family, it became difficult to continue working in such a crisis related capacity as a direct service provider. She took a position with the Maryland Citizen Foster Care Review Boards, assisting boards in conducting permanency reviews of foster care cases. Her family moved to New Jersey in 1987 and she was a stay-at-home mom for a while. In January 1993, just before her youngest child turned 5, she joined Essex County CASA as a Case Supervisor. “I have been fortunate to give my own three children a good start in life. I work for CASA because we make a difference in the lives of children who have not had this good fortune.” Maura O’Donnell Kelly, JD, Associate Director: Administration Maura joined our staff as a case supervisor in November, 2004. She came to us from CASA of Rochester, NY where she served as a volunteer advocate, VISTA volunteer and case supervisor. Maura’s involvement with CASA began in 1996 when she became a CASA advocate in Pittsburgh, PA. Maura and her husband are parents of three sons and while they were growing up she spent considerable time as a community volunteer with scout organizations, her college alumnae group, church and PTA activities. She has been a Board member of the Junior League of Pittsburgh as well as several non-profit organizations. Maura values her volunteer activities and enjoys working with our volunteer advocates. Maura is a 1976 graduate of Smith College where she majored in Government. She earned her J.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1980 and is a member of the Bars of New York and Pennsylvania.
Catherine P. Wilson, MSW, Associate Director: Program Services Catherine started with CASA in April, 2004. She began her career in social work in October, 2001 when she was hired as a caseworker by the Division of Youth and Family Services. There she learned case management and how to effectively service her clients. Catherine chose to work for CASA in order to more effectively advocate for children in foster care. Prior to working with DYFS, Catherine attended Rowan University where she received a B.A. in Communication with a concentration in Professional Writing. Catherine worked as a reporter in her junior and senior years at college. In 2000, she received the Sam Donaldson award for Excellence in Journalism and in 1999 she received the Editor's Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry. Erinn returned to the states and managed a community center in New York City for people who had been affected by the events on September 11, 2001. She enjoyed working with that population but always desired to work with children. After leaving The ARC she gained valuable experience as a Family Service Specialist at the Division of Youth & Family Services and as a Care Manager with the Care Management Organization, Bergen's Promise, Inc. Dissatisfied with the politics of the child welfare bureacracy and the lack of hands-on social work practice, Shyra left case management to become a Prevention Specialist teaching Life Skills to elementary and middle school students and their families. She was drawn to CASA because of its strong mission and the outstanding work being done to give voices to children who otherwise wouldn't be heard. "It feels great being on this side of the table where I can sincerely feel a part of the change. Seeing the children achieve permanency is beyond rewarding." Shyra resides in Bergen County with her husband. She plans to pursue her Master's Degree in Social Work in the very near future.
