Essex County CASA is an independent, court-authorized, nonprofit organization which works through professionally trained and supervised volunteers to promote the welfare of foster children in Essex County, New Jersey who have been removed from their homes because of extreme parental abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA serves as a child's "Voice in Court", working to insure that needed services and assistance are provided while helping to move the child toward a safe and permanent home.
These children can fall through the cracks of New Jersey's overburdened child welfare system. 2,901 or 25% of the children in foster care in New Jersey are from Essex County. Many have no legal representation and no one to speak up for their best interest. That's where Essex County CASA - the Court Appointed Special Advocate program - comes in.
CASA volunteers speak up for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. A judge needs as much information as possible in order to make decisions about the future for a child in foster care. CASA helps to provide that information by using trained community volunteers to investigate the background of a foster care case and recommend to the judge what will best help the child move to a safe and stable home.
